Birds

31/08/22 In Area 10 again were 2 Swift over Black Swan Lake and 7 Blackcap were all around the big Hawthorn tree in the Car Park Field, with a Willow Warbler moving through seen by Fraser Cottington.

28/08/22 5 Swift were seen in Area 10 with a Kingfisher and 5 Grey Wagtail by Fraser Cottington. Also seen was a Juvenile Pied Flycatcher seen briefly at the bottom of the car park field along with 2 Raven and a Lesser Whitethroat .

27/08/22 2 Swift were seen in Area 10 over the Old Golf Course by Fraser Cottington.Also aLesser Whitethroat was in the carpark field.

26/08/22 An elusive Redstart was seen in Area 10, at the bottom of the car park field with 2 Lesser Whitethroat by Fraser Cottington. Also seen were 2 Green Sandpiper flying over the Car Park field by Richard Marsh along with Blackcap and Whitethroat in the hedgerows.

25/08/22 A Yellow Wagtail was heard calling once in Area 7A by Paul O'Neill,before being seen heading West over Queens Road and then heading back East towards Cantley Park. .

24/08/22 4 Swift were seen in Area 10, near the Dinton Activity Centre by Fraser Cottington. Also seen were 2 Swallow by Bob Bennett. In the Car park field were Willow Warbler ,6+ Chiffchaff , and 6 + Blackcap also seen by Fraser Cottington and a Skylark over the Car Park field seen by Nick Kightley.

22/08/22 A Kingfisher was seen in Area 10, near the Green Bridge seen by Alan Jackman.

21/08/22 2 Swift were seen in Area 10, near the Dinton Activity Centre by Fraser Cottington.

14/08/22 At 01:30 a female Tawny Owl was heard calling around my Area 4 garden . I guess it couldn't sleep either.

13/08/22 5 Grelag Goose flew over my Area 4 garden heading South calling at 07:30.

12/08/22 3 Kingfisher were seen near the Green Bridge in Area 10 by Michael Hubbard. Two flew upstream by the Green Bridge with a third heard calling.

10/08/22 Seen by Fraser Cottington in and around the bottom end of the Car park field in Area 10 were, Lesser Whitethroat , Garden Warbler , Whitethroat , Chiffchaff , Blackcap and a Bullfinch. All feeding in the hedgerows. Later a Spotted Flycatcher was seen briefly at the same location by Roger Stansfield.

09/08/22 Seen at 07:30 leaving a Willow tree at the junction of Toutley Rd/Old Forest Road in Area 8 were 3 Little Egret . Possibly roosted there, seen by Paul O'Neill.

08/08/22 In Area 8 a female Wheatear was seen on posts and rough ground, opposite Old Forest Road Meadows. In Area 7A a Raven was seen over Eamer Crescent, circling and drifting North West and a Hobby was heading South over Matthews Green Farm, quite high at first but gliding lower over the farm.All sightings by Paul O'Neill.

06/08/22 Seen and heard on the Litter Pick in Area 4 & 5 were Great spotted Woodpecker , a calling Green Woodpecker , Nuthach a family of Blue Tit and by Dragonfly Bridge a juvenile Grey Wagtail was seen feeding in the Emm Brook also seen was a Song Thrush .

02/08/22 In Area 10 a Kingfisher was seen to fly from Lavells Lake to the Wet Meadow by Michael Hubbard.

03/08/22  Mute Swan family On the reduced water at Heathlake in Area 1 were an Adult Coot with 2 juveniles, Mallard with 2 juveniles a pair ofMute Swan with 4 cygnets a Great Crested Grebe with 2 stripey headed Juveniles, a Moorhen with 2 juveniles and 30 Black headed Gulls with several juveniles. All in all, looks like quite a successful breeding season. Golden Argent In Area 1 at Kingfisher Bridge a juvenile Grey Wagtail was seen feeding in the Emm Brook also seen feeding in the river was a Song Thrush .

02/08/22 In Area 10 a Kingfisher was seen to fly from Lavells Lake to the Wet Meadow by Michael Hubbard.

Insects

30/08/22 Centre-barred Sallow The moth trap was out overnight on 29/08/22 in my Area 4 garden for the last time this month and emptied this morning. Another average catch with 47 moths of 24 species caught .  Flounced Rustic The highlights were a Centre-barred Sallow Atethmia centrago, and a Flounced Rustic Luperina testacea a first for the year. With 1 moth added for the year , this brings the FOTEB Moth list for 2022 to 210 species .Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

25/08/22 August Thorn The moth trap was out overnight on 24/08/22 in my Area 4 garden and emptied this morning. Another average catch with with 54 moths of 20 species caught .  Oak hook tip The highlights were a very worn August Thorn Ennomos quercinaria and a Oak Hook tip Watsonalla binaria With 1 moth added for the year , this brings the FOTEB Moth list for 2022 to 209 species .Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

23/08/22 Lygus pratensis On the vegetation in my Area 4 garden was what I believe to be Lygus pratensis . This bug is one of the most problematic mirid groups to identify. The five UK species can overlap considerably in colour, markings and size.

22/08/22 Small Square-spot The moth trap was out overnight on 21/08/22 in my Area 4 garden and emptied this morning. Catch sizes are definetly dwindling with 45 moths of 20 species caught .  Vines Rustic The highlights were Small Square-spot Diarsia rubi and Vines Rustic Hoplodrina ambigua . With 2 moths added for the year , this brings the FOTEB Moth list for 2022 to 208 species .Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

19/08/22 Light Emerald After a few days break the moth trap was out overnight on 18/08/22 in my Area 4 garden and emptied this morning. The total numbers caught were 79 moths of 28 species .  Straw Underwing The highlights were Straw Underwing Thalpophila matura and 2 Second genertion Light Emerald Campaea margaritata . No moths were added for the year .Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

16/08/22  Humming-bird Hawk-moth Seen feeding in an Area 7 garden on was a Humming-bird Hawk-moth Macroglossum stellatarum by Carol Woodman. Please note this is a picture from the FOTEB library and not taken on site. Macroglossum stellatarum  Swallow Prominent The highlights were Frosted Orange Gortyna flavago and a male

15/08/22  Frosted Orange The moth trap was out overnight on 14/08/22 in my Area 4 garden and emptied this morning. The total numbers caught were 79 moths of 35 species along with 121 Common Wasp Vespula vulgaris . Always makes the emptying a bit more exciting.  Swallow Prominent The highlights were Frosted Orange Gortyna flavago and a male Swallow Prominent Pheosia tremula .  Rush Veneer Also seen was the migrant Rush Veneer Nomophila noctuella . With 3 moths added for the year , this brings the FOTEB Moth list for 2022 to 205 species.Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

13/08/22  Common Darter Seen around Area 4 & 5 this morning , the Dragonfly Common Darter Sympetrum striolatum both male and female .The Damselfly Banded Demoiselle Calopteryx splendens  Small Copper The Butterflies Green veined White Pieris napi , Small Copper Lycaena phlaeas and Gatekeeper Pyronia tithonus . Also seen was the Dock Bug Coreus marginatus .

11/08/22  Buttoned Snout The moth trap was out overnight on 10/08/22 in my Area 4 garden and emptied this morning. The total numbers caught are getting lower with 60 moths of 27 species caught . I think that the full moon and clear skies are having an influence.  Common Wainscot The highlights were Buttoned Snout Hypena rostralis a first for the FOTEB list and the micro moth Agriphila geniculea .  Agriphila geniculea Also seen was Common Wainscot Mythimna pallens . With 3 moths added for the year , this brings the FOTEB Moth list for 2022 to 202 species.Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

08/08/22  Straw Underwing The moth trap was out overnight on 07/08/22 in my Area 4 garden and emptied this morning. The total numbers caught were dissapointing with 54 moths of 16 species .  Jersey Tiger The highlights were Straw Underwing Thalpophila matura a first for the year and a Jersey Tiger Euplagia quadripunctaria . With 1 moth added for the year , this brings the FOTEB Moth list for 2022 to 199 species.Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

06/08/22  Gatekeeper Butterflies seen on the wing in Areas 4 & 5 during this mornings litter pick were Gatekeeper Pyronia tithonus , Speckled Wood Pararge aegeria Speckled Wood and a Large White Pieris brassicae. Lots of Bees and Bumblebees were visiting the Wildflower Patch in Area 5.

04/08/22  Agpeta zoegana The moth trap was out overnight on 03/08/22 in my Area 4 garden and emptied this morning. The total numbers caught were less compared to 01/08/22 but there was still quality with 74 moths of 35 species caught . Orange Swift The highlights were V Pug Chloroclystis v-ata which unfortunately escaped whilst being photographed and the stunning micro moth Agpeta zoegana both firsts for the year . Silver Y Also seen was a male Orange Swift Triodia sylvina . With 3 moths added for the year , this brings the FOTEB Moth list for 2022 to 198 species.Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

01/08/22  Light Crimson Underwing The moth trap was out overnight on 31/07/22 in my Area 4 garden and emptied this morning. Totals caught were 150 moths of 50 species . Golden Argent The highlights were Light Crimson Underwing Catocala promissa and the micro moth Golden Argent Argyresthia goedartella with its characteristic 'head-down' resting posture, both firsts for the year . Carcina quercana Also seen was the micro moth Carcina quercana . With 12 moths added for the year , this brings the FOTEB Moth list for 2022 to 195 species.Following inspection and recording/photographing anything caught was released.

Plants/ Trees

20/08/22  Hops In Area 10 the fruit of HopsHumulus lupulus are on display.

07/08/22  Rosebay Willowherb On a stroll alongside the Emm in Area 4 & 5 were the tall, pretty pink flower spikes of Rosebay Willowherb Chamaenerion angustifolium . By the concrete support to Dragon fly Bridge was  Purple Loosestrife Purple Loosestrife Lythrum salicaria

06/08/22  Corncockle In addition to all the flowers on the Spine Road in Area 4 listed below , the Wildflower Patch in Area 5 near the Community Orchard also contains Corncockle Agrostemma githago a once common wildflower .

01/08/22  Spine Road Flowers In the central reservation of the Spine Road in Area 4 the wild flower patch is looking good with mostly Cornflower Centaurea cyanus , Ox- eye Daisy Leucanthemum vulgare , Corn Marigold Glebionis segetum and a few Common Poppy Papaver rhoeas .

Fungi Do not eat any fungi that have not been properly identified , some are DEADLY when ingested .

01/08/22 Chicken of the woods On a dead tree in the central reservation of the Spine Road in Area 4 is a fine example of Chicken of the Woods Laetiporus sulphureus .

Amphibians and Reptiles

Mammals

17/08/22 Seen by Graham Wright an American Mink Neovison vison was in the Emm Brook in Area 5 near the Woosehill Roundabout. This is the furthest downstream on the Emm Brook that they have been seen so far. With the current low water levels, it was probably have to travel further for food.

15/08/22 At 03:00 in Area 4 a Red Fox Vulpes vulpes was heard barking .An American Mink Neovison vison was seen in the Emm Brook in Area 10 under the Green Bridge by Steve Molloy.

Fish/ Crustaceans

13/08/22 Whilst walking up the Emm Brook during Balsam pulling in Area 4 a Perch Perca fluviatilis was seen .

Molluscs
